A guide to the UHS MCAT, especially for the A'levels students!

My fellow A'levels students, you must have always wondered if you will be able to enter the premier government medical universities of Pakistan by doing A'levels. Since, I had done A'levels, I always had that doubt in my mind about such an achievement as studying the FSC books seemed a hectic job. Let me tell you that I was able to erase all these doubts by acing the MCAT test, and making it to the top most medical university of Punjab. Trust me guys, believing in yourself and working hard can easily change anyone's fortunes for the good.

You don't need to be disheartened if you don't have the perfect equivalency. MCAT comprises 50% of the final aggregate that makes up the merit of the medical universities so getting a good score will ensure your entry into the medical world.

As for this guide, I'm sure you people have come across a lot of guides with a lot of stuff so I'm going to mention only the important stuff in Question and Answer style along with my own experience.

My own experience

I began my preparation at the beginning of August, with the paper scheduled for the 23rd of the following month i.e. September. So I had about 45 days with almost (I had attended a few classes at the KIPS academy) no previous experience with the FSC books. My preparation technique included a lengthy notes making process whereby I would write every little fact available in the FSC books in my register. Yes, it was a pretty boring process and it required a huge amount of time and resilience but in the end these notes were quite helpful for me. I was able to go through the books once in about 20 to 25 days and my notes were complete by the beginning of September. From here on, all I did was revise my notes and learnt every single detail I had written. I had my Shifa Medical College test on the 8th of September before which I was able to revise my notes atleast once.

Following the Shifa test, I started studying the KIPS books (KETS). And frankly speaking, they were utterly useless. They were just a summary of the FSC books, and if I had a choice I would have preferred going through the actual books rather than reading this summary that missed out on many facts. But one book that was quite useful to me among the 5 KIPS books was the supplementary one which gave a detailed view on the UHS MCAT syllabus and covered the missing topics in the FSC books (No question came out of these topics in the final exam). The vocabulary list at the end of English book was also quite useful. In the last 30 days before the exam, I started making flash cards of 25-50 words each day and it made learning them much easier. With my NUST medicine exam on the 15th of September, I was able to complete the KIPS books before that.

In the last 7 days before the MCAT, I revised my notes and attempted the KIPS full length papers (the pictures in my previous post) along with the practice questions given in the KIPS supplementary book.

As for the actual MCAT exam, I began the test with the Biology section. For some reason, I had the instinct that if I was able to do the Biology section successfully, my whole paper would go well. And that is exactly what happened. As I went through the Biology MCQs, I got more confident with every fact I knew and when I moved on the Physics and Chemistry portion, they seemed a piece of cake with some conceptual questions that weren't a big deal for us, A'levels students. I attempted every question in the paper, eventhough I had doubts about some of them. My worst section, as I came to know when I checked the paper, was surprisingly English. I had 5 questions wrong in this one with mistakes in some of the vocabulary questions despite having gone through the list. But my other sections made up for this.

Overall, MCAT was a pretty good experience for me. Biology section had pretty straight forward factual questions that I answered from my knowledge of the FSC books. Physics and Chemistry also had a lot of factual questions but in some cases, you did require sound concepts to come to the conclusion. That's all for my experience.

What should I expect in the entry test? And how should I prepare?

The entrance test is based on the FSC books entirely. There's a syllabus given for the MCAT by UHS. You can check out this year's syllabus. The content, however, will ALWAYS be from FSC, remember that. So you'll need to go over the FSC books. There's no alternative to that. But sticking to the UHS syllabus won't be a bad idea.

There are plenty of Entry Test books available that you could buy to practice MCQs (but they will never follow the syllabus) with Caravan and Jahangir, the famous ones. I used the KETS books. However, it's hard to get your hands on the KETS books unless you are a student of KIPS.

KIPS or Star Academy?

I'd advice neither. I did attend KIPS last year but I ended up having an attendance of merely 20% just because it was pretty useless. Some people told me that the practice tests are quite useful. But I found out the hard way that they don't let you take the tests home and since we hadn't studied the FSC syllabus beforehand, I was always dumbfounded by the tests. Secondly, their approach to teaching is totally different and quite annoying for us A'levels students. All they tell you is to learn everything by rote and you can do that while sitting at home too. Plus, their tests usually have out of syllabus questions and you'll end up being disappointed. If you really want to get some practice you can attend the full length model paper session that they offer just before the MCAT test. By this time, you would be done with your preparation and so practicing those tests will give you a pretty good idea of what to expect in the final exam. Check out the KIPS tests I posted previously in the MCAT resources post.

I've heard many A'levels students are rejected and end up being disappointed because they can't get admissions, is this true?

You've heard right, I'm afraid so. But in the past 2 years the situations has gotten a lot better with the introduction of A* and printing of a definite syllabus by the UHS. But you've got to accept the fact that there is no alternative to FSC books.

What is the format of the UHS MCAT exam, is it an all MCQs paper?

Yes, there are a total of 220 MCQ's; 30 from English, 44 from Physics, 58 from Chemistry and 88 from Biology. You've got 150 minutes to do all of them.

What is the better option for questions that I have doubt about, guessing or leaving?

I'm sure you guys know that every wrong answer gets you a negative mark while a correct answer gives you 5 marks. As far as I'm concerned, I didn't leave any questions for an apparent logical reasoning. There are 4 options for every question so even if you blindly guess an answer, there is a 1/4 or 25% probability that you do it correctly. So for every 4 questions guessed blindly, you have a chance of doing 1 question correct which gives you +5 marks (for the correct answer) and -3 marks (for the 3 wrong answers), a gain of 2 marks. Playing with the probability is a risky option, but this gain of 2 marks can be of quite advantage. Plus, in most cases there are only two options for every question that you are confused about. So the probability is even more in your favor  But in case, you have a doubt about more than 20-25 questions in the whole paper, then it's better to leave them as the risk is too great then but even then if you get 5-6 questions right, you'll have a final gain. But remember the final choice is yours. If you don't feel comfortable getting that 1 mark cut then you are better off leaving the answer and securing those valuable marks.

How should I prepare in the last 10 days?

I'm sure you would be done with the FSC book at least once by now. So all you need to do is revise. Nothing is coming out of these books and the syllabus, so make sure you learn every minute detail that is needed. Jotting down important words and values on a piece of paper can really help. And make sure you also go through at least 2 full length papers so that you can get proper exam like feel. Do mark yourself so you know where you stand. In each of the last 5 days, I practiced one of the FLPs of KIPS that I uploaded. The results were usually disappointing because these exams are much harder than the actual MCAT but now that you guys have 2 past papers, 2011 and 2012, your practice will be much better.

If you have any other query, feel free to ask. I hope this helps. :)

  5. It was purely my opinion. I'm sure for some the teaching style worked but all they did was repeat the stuff in the books and I found that useless. The tests are obviously useful but only if you have covered the syllabus.

Anyways, your experience must have been different. :)

But all you need to do is be relaxed, manage time properly and don't sweat it out. If you have prepared properly, you'll know almost every single question out there on the paper. Make sure you also practice A LOT of questions and also time yourself doing full length papers so that you can have that real exam like feel.

Unless you're an fsc kid. The flps help though yes. The tests not so much. The questions are out of syllabus and sometimes they are just wrong. However a thing has recently started to bother me. You wrote in one of your blogs that fsc prepares you for medical studies ahead. In a levels I used to thoroughly enjoy my studies and all the subjects really used to open up my mind and sadly my FSc books experience was the most horrible academic experience of my life. Would you please give a brief insight about what an a level student experiences in terms of studies in a Pakistani medical college. Does one enjoy the intensity of medical studies. 1. You've got to make your own plan because in the end that is what works the best. I can't state any specific time either because everybody has their own potential. But since you haven't even started your preparation and you are still feeling lost, you need to give every single second within the next two months to studying. You should start with the FSc books, keep the syllabus besides you and start learning stuff. Write down what you think, you will forget, or underline/highlight if you feel that is better for you.

    1. Those book are not exactly according to the syllabus so you don't need to solve them. I have also uploaded KIPS full length papers on this blog in my other post so you can check that out along with the MCAT papers. Truly speaking, the questions of MCAT are pretty rote based, if you do some of the questions wrong you just need to open the book and see the right answer, very little understanding is involved and you only need a teacher for those questions. You can clearly do them yourself. But if you have ample time, and you feel that academy would be a good motivation then you should go and attempt those papers. As for my personal experience, I didn't attend any test session and thankfully still did well in my exam.

I have very high aims and I want to get myself enrolled into King Edward Medical University. I'm not even scared of mcat because I think we all need to believe in ourselves. I'm going to get admission in Lgs...any good branch you recommend for girls? Since you are from Lgs too. So I've decided to study for my A1, along with fsc year1(at home) ...the syllabus is almost the same i saw... studying same chapters from both ...extra knowledge haha! I'll be making notes as for the entire. And as I enter A2, I'll start with fsc year 2 notes in summers 2016. Mcat is conceptual and entirely fsc based so I think I need to go through every depth to secure my admission in KEMU. What do you recommend? Any improvements?... for only I think I should never waste my time as these two years will decide my future now.
    Please do reply OakMoon! :)

    1. If you don't get a lot of A*s then I'd recommend you go for FSc, as the equivalence can drop a lot, and as you know, there is a very high merit these days for KE. Anyways, that's a very good plan, if you aim to excel and work so hard for it, you are eliminating all chances of failure and that's the best way to go about it. What I need to mention is that no matter how much you study in the next two year, it's only the last two months that'll matter because the MCAT is mostly based on rote learning and you can't retain the information for long. So best of luck with your preparation and your result, hoping that you achieve your aims.

    2. As for the LGS branches for girls, there are many good ones with LGS Defence the most famous one, along with 1A1, Kaabana and the recently opened LGS JT for Girls, any one of those will be good enough. We have students from Defence and 1A1 in KE.

    1. At least do 5-6 full length papers before the exams, especially all the past papers that you can get your hands on as they are exactly according to the syllabus.

  59. I don't get one thing. Wouldn't having to go through the completely unfamiliar syllabus of fsc be difficult in the last months for someone who does a levels? You also mentioned that you aced most of your biology section from your knowledge of fsc books. The entry test and mcat is entirely from fsc syllabus. Then why do a levels?
(PS i really want to do a levels after my o levels but the more research i do, the more i think I'll be making a mistake. Please give your opinion on this. Thankyou oak moon :)

  60. AOA. I have an equivalence of 84% in O level. I joined pre classes for fsc but I can't adjust at all. This is very depressing. Plus the rote learning thingy is so hard... there was nothing such in o level. Its been 3 months and I can't adjust and people studying with me are already done with half of the syllabus with rote learning.
Should I join A Level? This is tough for me to decide. I am determined to perform very well for mcat even if I have to study fsc books. Also, I've heard mcat is conceptual and A level students can easily ace it if they work very hard...like you did. What do you recommend?

    1. Its not that I want to get admission in KE only. I want to get into any govt institution for medical. Would I have a chance if I score 1000+ in mcat and ace it in A level?

      Delete
    2. You are not the first one to experience this when shifting to FSc. You'll have to study the same stuff in A'levels too and the problem with A'levels is mention in this post of mine: http://academicshelp.blogspot.com.tr/2013/08/alevels-or-fsc-after-olevels-for.html?showComment=1439588365387#c1025397227648149688, that your O'levels equivalence will make 73% of your final FSc equivalence.
You will definitely need a 1000+ score in MCAT to stand any chance to make it to a government medical institution. But if you are not able to cope with the rote learning of FSc, then the best thing is to shift back to the A'levels system. You'll have alternate options too if you keep a subjects like Mathematics along with your sciences.

    1. Only your compulsory 8 subjects are included for your equivalence, so if you have a B in one of those then you can consider Fsc but you'll have to get accustomed to the system of Fsc and it s difficult at times. I'd suggest you continue with A'levels and work hard to ensure that you get good marks in MCAT and make it to a government medical college, if that's the field you want for your future.

    1. Ofcourse, you do have a very good chance if you work hard enough. I, myself only had an equivalence of 975, the same that you'll get if you get 3A*s in A'levels and I did make it to KE by doing well in MCAT.

    1. Sir, I wrote a whole blog pose giving word of advice. Trust me when I say this, MCAT is not as difficult as it is portrayed to be, we had 7/70 students of our Biology batch make it to KE, 4-5 in AIMC, along with many in other government medical colleges. I had 1034 and I have to say that my luck played a huge part. One thing I've been good at is attempting the final exam paper in a calm way. Forget that your career is on line, or that this is your only chance, forget that the exam matters, and do the exam with the most peaceful of mind. Don't panic!
As for these last four days: practice the past papers I have uploaded on this blog and make sure you know answers to each and every question in it. Try going through the FSc books once again based on the MCAT syllabus.
Why didn't you apply to Army Medical College?

    2. thanks alot for the advice and words of inspiration..yes i did give the test for aimc..but i didnt score enough primarily because the test was 10 days after my CIEs and there was not enough time to cram whole of fsc..yes i have been going to kips for the syllabus and nowadays we are having the full length papers..although i do feel that they are more difficult than the actual pastpapers of mcat..and they give questions which are out of syllabus now..:/

I got straight A*S in my O levels and straight A's in AS .I will be appearing for mcat next year, probably. The thing that has really frightened me is the recent result of my seniors .Even the high achievers were not able to make it to a medical college .So I was thinking to give SAT and other on medical tests as a backup but at the same time I am thinking to drop math so I can focus only on my 3 subjects as medical is my foremost priority ,I am in a fix .What should I do ? Plus ,my teachers are saying to start preparing for mcat from now.Is not it too early ?

    1. Start preparing for MCAT if you have time right now. Download the UHS MCAT syllabus of this year from the website and read the chapters from fsc books that are mentioned in the syllabus.
The problem with MCAT is its rote pattern, and if you read the blog above, I've mentioned the problems we, the A'levels students encounter but if you work hard enough you can make it to a medical college. You need SAT only if you are foreign student for medical colleges, but if you want to give it as a backup then that isn't a bad idea.
If you think Mathematics is hampering your progress in your other subjects, then you can drop it but since you already have given AS level, I don't think it will be a problem. I, myself, had 5 subjects in A'levels, and I gave all my papers together in A2, which included Further Mathematics along with the 4 subjects you have.

    2. You are a genius.MA .Kudos !
I don't think I am smart enough to handle four subjects along with mcat preparation when I know I am not very good at math.I have to give extra time to it.
Thanks a ton .May God bless you.
Btw should I rote learn the chapter or read them thoroughly ?

    1. If you go for A'levels, you'll have to work hard and ensure that you get 3A*s and later on work hard to get a good SAT score because only that would help you in getting in on an overseas seat.

    2. Will taking 2 more O levels make a difference?

And no it's not necessary to do SAT but it is an option for overseas seats people. You can either appear in the SAT or in local MCAT.

    1. For medicine in Pakistan, you need a pre-medical equivalence certificate for IBCC and to acquire that you must have passed Physics, Chemistry and Biology. No alternative to that.

    2. But the problem is that i have already taken BIO, CHEM AND MATHS.

    2. Like I mentioned in my blog above, I didn't do as well in the English section as I should have probably because I never studied English in the way that is tested in this exam. Those pedantic details about grammar etc are a bit difficult to learn and I had no clue about them.

As for the circles, if you are sure about an answer then circle it right away. But if you even have the minutest of doubts about any question leave them for later on. Another approach is to complete one section like Physics and Chemistry on the question paper and then fill the circles on the answer sheet after that section. But leaving all 220 circles to be filled at the end will not be a good idea.

    1. Ofcourse you can, you need to study harder. Try learning concepts more, and use KIPS books, that are now strictly according to the syllabus. If you remember A'levels concepts leave them and focus more on the new concepts. Biology is most important so complete that first, and do focus on the topics more that have more MCQs assigned to them.

      Delete
    2. Thanks brother. But I don't have KIPS books. I do have classified past mcat questions and what I have concluded so far is that they're very simple questions (after you've memorised everything, of course). I once saw one of my friends' KIPS book and it had many out of syllabus questions. Also their mode of questioning was not similar to MCAT's. So would it be okay if I did just the past paper questions, rather than being distracted by these academies' books?
