Equivalence Calculator - O/A'levels to Matric/FSc

Many students are unaware of the exact equivalence process during their O/A'levels. And as I have stated in my other posts, knowing this process can really be essential to make a decision regarding your future, such as the decision to do A'levels or FSc after O'levels.

In this post I will not only state the procedure, but anyone can comment below with their grades, and I'll calculate their equivalence and percentage myself.

Here are the forms and documents posted on the IBCC website that are necessary for getting your certificate made: Equivalence Form and Equivalence Details.

Firstly, you need to understand that the following procedure started taking place for the exams including and after the June 2010 session, and if you have a subject that you appeared before 2010 will have different rules.

Secondly, every grade in O'levels and A'levels is given a specific number of marks, and you need to have 8 subjects-including Pakistan Studies, Islamiat and Urdu- if you did your O'levels from Pakistan, and 5 subjects if you did it from abroad or are in possession of a foreign passport.

If you have Physics, Chemistry and Biology/Computer Studies as your optional subjects, you get a "Science" certificate but in case your 8th subject is Additional Mathematics, you'll get an "Arts" certificate, along with any other combination of subjects.

The following marks are specified for each grade in both O and A'levels:

A*=90
A=85
B=75
C=65
D=55 and so on..

The marks given in the certificate are out of 900 and not 800.

Example: A local student, Akram, gets 4A*s, 2As, 1B and 1D in his O'levels, so his equivalence will be calculated as follows:
4*90+2*85+75+55= 660/800

Now converting it to total of 900, 660*900/800 = 742.5/900
So this guy will have 742.5 on his Matric certificate.

For A'levels equivalence you need to have given 8 subjects in O'levels and 3 subjects in A'levels, with Physics, Chemistry and Biology for Pre-Medical and Mathematics instead of Biology for Pre-Engineering. The 3 subjects marks are added to the 8 of the O'levels to give you an equivalence of FSc marks out of 1100.

Example for A'levels Equivalence: Akram now gets 1A*, 1B and 1C in his A'levels, so he got 90+75+65 = 230/300 in his A'levels alone. To find his FSc equivalence I'll add these to his O'levels marks out of 800, 230+660 = 890

So basically, this is how you calculate the equivalent marks of FSc and Matric if you are following the British education system. If you have any queries, leave a comment.

  1. but according to this equivlancy program the students of o/a levels have a disadvantage but there is an increase in the ratio of students opting o levels?

    1. The A* reduces the disadvantage by quite a margin, along with the conceptual studies in O'levels make it preferable.

  2. Salam OakMoon!
I got 1A,2B,2C in IGCSE, and i am expecting something between 3C to 3B in ALevels so what can my equivalence be?
i am in the same boat as you were before...i am starting to prepare for mcat from today.... i hope its not to late, can you please give me some tips or guidance from your experience, like should i make notes or just study? My cousin gave me KET'S bio, phy, chem and eng books so are they enough as i have 50 days approximately :(
Thank you for all these posts. waiting for your reply!

    1. 85+2*75+2*65=300*800/500=480/800 in O'levels. If you get 3Bs your A'levels equivalence will be 480+3*75=705 and in case of 3Cs it will be 480+3*65=675

Check this other post of mine for MCAT preparation details: http://academicshelp.blogspot.com/2013/08/a-guide-to-uhs-mcat-especially-for.html

You'll have to go through the FSc books, as you can't replace them with the KETS ones. With your grades, and the resulting equivalence, there are very less chances of making it to a public medical college in Pakistan so you should also apply to private colleges.

    2. Well, that was a little demotivating...but i am an overseas student....
So if i work really hard for MCAT, what should be my target score in MCAT to cover up my board exam result? Like how much i SHOULD and MUST score out of 1100?
Thank you, and i am waiting for your response.

      Delete
    3. I am not sure how the merit of overseas seats is made but if they require MCAT then you should work as hard as possible and get the maximum number of marks you can.

      Delete
    4. All i have are the KETS books, so are they enough for MCAT? My cousin who gave me the books said that they are summaries but are more than enough.....And by maximum number, what exact number should i keep as my target? Last thing, should i reveise my ALevel books too? Is the exam ONLY from FSC or even ALevel?
      Thank you for your response!

  3. What will be the total marks if we've given 7 subjects in O'levels instead of 8?
Like in your example it's 800

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. The total marks will still be out of the 900 by the ratio method. But for O'levels equivalence there is a requirement to have 8 subjects if you have done your O'levels from Pakistan, and only 5 subjects are counted (Urdu, Pakistan Studies and Islamiat are not included) if you have completed your O'levels from abroad or have a foreign nationality.

      Delete
    2. Could you please let me know about A'levels equivalence too?
Like is it done all together with AS and the A2 results? Or could we just get a separate equivalence certificate for AS so we can apply for MCAT?
      Thanks a lot.

      Delete
    3. No, you can only get your equivalence made after your A2 that is with complete A'levels result. As for MCAT they require a hope certificate that gives an assurance that you'll get atleast 60% marks.

  4. What if somebody does Fsc after taking 9 subjects
    Islamiyat
    Second Language Urdu
    Pakistan Studies
    English Language
    Computer Science
    Mathematics(Syllabus D)
    Additional Mathematics
    Chemistry
    Physics ?
    What will be the procedure?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Since this is O'levels you'll get a Matric equivalence by IBCC from the 8 subjects (5 compulsory, and 3 optional) out of the 9 you took. In this case if you apply for a "Science" certificate they will not include Additional Mathematics grade when making your equivalence and consider the rest of your 8 subjects. Your total marks will be equated to 900 instead of 800 by ratio method as described above, and this certificate will be used for your admission to FSc.
FSc marks will be out of 1100 and you'll not require any other certificate for that.

    My grades are, O'levels: 2A, 2 C, 4 B, 1U
    A'level grades are: 3A, 1E

  9. The problem with a U grade is that it doesn't appear on the final certificate, which makes it unaccountable for. You will have to appear for the exam again to have your equivalence made, but you can confirm this by calling the IBCC people.

    6. No, it isn't different. The only difference causing thing is your A'levels from abroad. Your subjects are a bit confusing for me too so I'll just tell you the probable equivalence. The 5 subjects from O'levels that I'll count are Physics, Chemistry and Biology so 85+75x3+65+75+65x2=580

Converting it to out of 1100, 580x1100/800= 798
So 798 will be your equivalence. But it could be around this, as I don't know if IBCC accepts ICT as a subject or not.

I have gone through the IBCC doc on their web site and also checked at different sites but it seems kind of confusing. All I know at this point its one of the following:
    a) deduct 20% so 92% will end up being 72%
    b) deduct 15% so it will be 77%
    c) deduct 5% so it will be 87%
On top of that I hear they keep changing rules every couple of years, I am hoping to get this done next year.

      So you'll have 85x5+75x3=650/800
      Then for 900 total= 650x900/800
      =731

Your equivalence will be 731 marks out of 900 or 81.25%

  69. Assalam-O-Alaikum,OakMoon.I've been following your blog since the past two years, and I just wanted to say you're doing a wonderful job in figuring out the mind-boggling conundrums that students usually come across.Especially for O/A Level students.

My enquiry is a tad off-topic and I hope the slight irrelevance doesn't make you hesitant in answering it.In O2,I scored above average grades(Two As and a B) and I'm going to appear for the rest of the subjects this May/June.I never really had an aptitude for mathematics since grade 6,as far as I remember;and that is making it really difficult for me to keep up with the rest of the class's progress. It has come to the point where my math teacher is suggesting me to appear in math in the Oct/Nov session as appearing now will not only put extensive burden on me,but it will also adversely affect the grades of subjects I'm good at.

My math teacher further added that it's possible to take admission in A-Levels without one O-Level subject and that you can appear for O and A level subjects simultaneously.

So,is it advisable to appear in mathematics in the Oct/Nov session and give some breathing space for the rest of the subjects in which I can potentially score good grades,or should I appear now and try to avoid the possible risks that come with appearing later? Your insightful response will be abundantly appreciated.

    1. If I was in your position, I would have given the exam this May/June with my full effort and if, and only if, I didn't get a good grade I'd repeat it in Oct/Nov. But remember, its purely your choice. If you think making an effort for Mathematics will affect your preparation for other subjects then of course, your teacher stands correct. As for me, I don't think it will make a difference to your preparation. But its you who has to decide keeping in mind your potential and how much effort and hard work you can put in to prepare for the 5 subjects you are left with.

  70. Hey, i need to know my equivalent percentage. I have done o levels and still have to give two more which are Pakistan studies and islamiyat studies.coming to the point. My current olevel results are 1A,5B,1C and 1D. Thank you in advance. You really are helpful.

    1. You need Islamiat and Pakistan Studies for equivalence as they are compulsory subjects.

    2. I know bro i will be giving these both this year in June. I wanted the equivalent of these subjects.

      Delete
    3. You'd get 630/900 with the above 8 grades, and remember only 8 subjects which include the 5 compulsory are considered for equivalence and extra subjects are not counted.

    2. So like if i had a C and after the retake i get a A. The C wont matter? also I gave 5 subjects in which i got 2 Cs and want to now repeat them in Sept. Will i be able to get admission in a college this year? like before i get my result? i have also given 2 before. I had to give math in may but now i'll give it with the other 2 subjects in sept.

    3. Yes, it won't matter if you get the equivalence made. You can get the admission but most colleges require you to possess equivalence and for that you need all 8 subjects.

    1. Its 675/900.
A small e is supposed to be AS level, I am not sure if incompleted subjects are considered by them.

  82. Hey, firstly I wanted to know whether IBCC includes the subject grades that we only do in AS (for only first year if Alevels) in their equivalence?
Secondly, I wanted to know the exact percentage of scores that is deducted from both GCSE and Alevels.
And finally,I've heard from a few people that generally medical universities prefer the matric students. Is this any true? If yes than how?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. No, you've to complete the A'levels to have your grades counted in the equivalence.
You get 90% on A*, 85 for A and so on. They just have fixed marks for your grades, and don't look at your percentage.
There is no preference, but matric student tend to get better marks than what are the maximum possible narks for us.

  83. Dear Oakmoon,
I am an overseas Pakistani student. I have done my IGCSE with 7 A*s and 2 As and my AS level with 3 As and 1 B. I will be completing my A levels in june. I intend to apply to AKU for medicine. what minimum grades and sat scores should I get to be on the safe side.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I'm not sure of the SAT score that is require by AKU for overseas student, but once you meet their minimum criteria, all that matters is the interview. Make sure you build your CV in a way to sweep them off their feet within the hour you get to talk.

  87. Hey, oakmoon. I am an 8th grade student and aim to do MBBS in the future. My mother is a doctor and she wants me to do matric (she doesnt mind me doing level either but she prefers matric) but I want to do Olevel because I love conceptual learning and the english language. I want to be a writer as well in the future and I fear matric would suck out all my creative juices. I am a somewhat good student (my percentage is usually above 95%) and when i memorise all the concepts, I automatically memorise everything word to word. My mother says that bcs of this i should do matric because i will get more marks because of my tendency to memorise everything word to word as well as by concepts. I want to do FSC after Olevels but i dont mind matric as well. What i fear is that matric will suck out all my creative juices because of the rote learning, but everyone says that is not so. Is it true that matric will stop my creativity or is it wrong? I study in beaconhouse (it offers both matric and olevel) and am confused whether to do olevels or matric. Please tell me which one to choose. Thanks

    Replies
    1. Please reply quick because we have less than a week to choose

    2. You need to understand that creativity comes from within you. Yes, it won't be polished as well in Matric as in O'levels, but you can always learn stuff side by side with your course work. But my opinion, and advice will be that you do O'levels. As you can see from my blog, I am a student who made it to King Edward after A'levels, so its not that difficult any more for use either to do MBBS. But even if you intend to do FSc, you can do O'levels first to hone your creativity and to develop better concepts, as many of my class mates have done that and easily made it to MBBS. Follow what your heart says, and don't let your mother influence what might be a crucial decision for you.
